Islamic hate Crime Graph

Hi my name is Tanya. This blog is an assignment from my English 101. I was given a graph called "Anti-Islamic Hate Crime Incidents 1995-2008". This graph shows the amount of hate crimes for each year between 1995 and 2008. In the years 1995 to 2000 the amount of hate crimes was a range from 21 to 52. In the year 2001 the amount of Anti-Islamic hates crimes was 481 making it the highest on the chart. From 2002 to 2008 the amount decreased. It ranged from 155 to 105.  This graph shows how significant the events of 9/11 were to the Islamic people. After 9/11 many people labeled Muslims as terrorist because the people responsible for the attack were from the Middle East. This graph is important because it proves that anybody can be attacked and discriminated based on their religion or culture after on event.  If it was an African American who attacked the twin towers the whole African American race would be labeled as terrorist. The same thing is true for Caucasians.  I think this should concern everyone. No race or culture is safe from the possibility of being labeled a terrorist or an enemy of the United States.

"culture ignorance"

Hi my name is Tanya. I am reading a book called Zeitoun in my English 101 class. The author of the book is Dave Eggers and he writes about a Muslim man who lives through the events of hurricane Katrina. In the book the main character, Zeitoun, is capture and placed in prison with out being told the reason. In  the story culture ignorance is shown. Dave Eggers writes "moments later, another passing solider looked at Zeitoun and muttered Taliban" (Eggers 213). Zeitoun was called a Taliban because of his culture. If he was Caucasian man he wouldn't be called a Taliban. It would be the same if he was an African American. because Zeitoun appearance tells you his culture the soldiers associate him with Taliban's, Terrorist, and Al Qaeda. The term culture ignorance is associating every one with the same culture with the most talked about scenarios. Hurricane Katrina happened shortly after 9/1. This plays a huge part in why Zeitoun was arrested. it had nothing to do with the fact that he was suspected of looting. it was because he was Muslim and from the middle east.

Zeitoun

Hi my name is Tanya and i'm writing this blog for my English 101 class. We are reading a book called "Zeitoun" by Dave Eggers. this story takes place in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina. The main character made the decision to not evacuate with his family after hearing that the hurricane was a category 5 storm. in the beginning  Zeitoun appeared stubborn and ignorant to the idea of the storm having any effect on the city. I believe that ignorance is what made him stay in New Orleans and watch his family leave him behind. Zeitoun learned that the storm was powerful enough to ruin his home, community and keep him away from his family. when Zeitoun was faced with the reality and danger of the storm he immediately began to help people. "he had never felt such urgency and purpose" (Eggers 116). this shows that Zeitoun has found himself in the actions of helping people. i believe that Zeitoun only showed ignorance because he wasn't sure on what his reason was for staying. Zeitoun could have left and met his family when he noticed  notice that the storm was powerful. Instead he choose to stay and help people all while honoring his brother.

Sandy storyline

I am writing this blog on two sandy storyline videos. This is an assignment from my English101 class. The assignment is to watch two vedios and summarize it using quotes from the video.

Sheapshead bay, Brooklyn is one of the many places affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the video " A Current on Shore Parkway" Joe Lombardi was interviewed about his experience from Hurricane Sandy. Joe Lombardi owns a house in sheepshead bay that was destroyed from the hurricane. Joe and his family did not evacuate and we're forced to leave there homes in the middle of the night due to flooding and power outage in there homes. Joe, his brother, mother, wife and two kids walked a long distance in water that was high enough to almost reach the wife and mother necks. The water in the street had currents. Joe says " to walk away alive, unstaind, and health wise fine; were the lucky ones" (Joe Lombardi). There are so many people who died, people who have developed life threatening illness and people who were serverly injured during hurricane sandy. If you were still psychically in tacked after the hurricane u are considered lucky in joe eyes. Joe mentioned how he thinks more hurricanes like this will come because of global warming and I agree. Climate change will cause sea levels to rise. It will cause natural disasters if not watched closely and maintained. More families like joe's will have these challenging experiences.

Home onwers have no choice but to continue to pay there mortage and find ways to rebuild there homes after hurricane sandy. In the video "The Time in Between" Debbie Tunner was interviewed a spoke about her efforts to rebuild and fix the home she's lived in for 7 years after Hurricane Sandy destroyed it. Debbie turnner like joe family did not evacuate. Debbie was 8 months pregnant when the storm hit. Her daughter Ayla who was 7 at the time said she could have drowned in her room. They all survived the storm and moved into a rental while they wait for the government and insurance company to give her money to started fixing her home. Debbie feels that she can't give up on her house because she will be in dept. she wouldn't be able to buy a care and she can't walk away from her responsibilities. She has gotten all her paper work done for her house to be approved for rebuilding and paper work to recieve 10,000 dollars that would go into her home, but it was all lost. So it all had to be done all over again. Debbie says " it's just a waiting game" (Debbie's Tunner). The government and insurance campanies are not working diligently on getting families back in there homes. Debbie says it would talke at least a year for her to be back in her home. The government and other companies that will economically be affected by climate change are not prepared. Nore are they ready for the responsibility of insuring families homes and safety.

quote sandwich

I believe that New York city is not prepared for climate change because we are not using technology to fix climate change. We are also not creating new technology for the purpose of climate change. In the New York times article New York is Lagging as Seas and risk Rises, Critics WarnMireya Navarro talks about New York city not being prepared for the dangers of climate change. she talks about the risk of floods and weathers like hurricanes. Navarro supports my idea when she writes that Some New Yorkers believe the answer to climate change is not evacuation but in prevention, "like armoring city waterways with the latest high-tech barriers" (Navarro).  In order to survive climate change we need to come up wit ways to prevent the worst damages with technology. I agree with this because many people do not have enough money to pick up and move. The majority of people would look to the government to protect them.

peer review

Today in my English class we did peer review on our first essay assignment. I received very constructive feed back. My peers liked my paragraph structure and quoting. I was told I need to work on my grammar and citing where my quotes are from. I was also told that i need to a wider range of vocabulary because in my draft i was very repetitive. I plan on writing at least 2 more drafts before I turn in my final essay to make sure that I hand in my best work. I will also take all the comments I received today in consideration while I further develop my essay. I need to work on constructing a thesis statement. it would be nice to go over how to formulate a thesis in class and also work on the science paragraph in class. I am going to seek help in making sure my essay structure is correct and I will also see for more peer review inside and outside class.

The climate casino graph

Hello, my name is Tanya and this blog if for my English 101 class. It will be about a graph shown in the book " The Climate Casino".In the climate casino figure 2 on page 92 shows a global effect of co2 emission. The graph shows that co2 emissions have gown up from 1900s to the 2000s. The trend is 2.6% per year. The blue line on the graph shows the actual growth of co2. This graph is important because it gives the reader a visual view on how much co2 we are throwing into the atmosphere. It also shows that the growth hasn't been steady. The blue shows that at times the co2 emission inclined and declined. This graph also shows that we humans haven't been doing much to slowing the rapid growth of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
